Ross Reels FAQ

How should I clean my Ross Reel?

All Ross Reels are fully anodized to protect against corrosion and the elements. To keep your reel performing at its best, we recommend a quick rinse after each use, especially in saltwater or alkali environments. For a deeper clean:

  1. Remove the spool from the frame.
  2. Rinse or soak the components in fresh or distilled water.
  3. Let both parts completely air dry before reassembling.

Can I switch my reel from left-hand to right-hand retrieve?

Yes. Most Ross Reels are designed so you can easily switch retrieve direction. Depending on the model:

  • Some reels use a unidirectional drag (simply spool line in the desired direction).
  • Others require a quick adjustment to the internal bearing or drag mechanism.

Check your reel’s model-specific instructions, or contact our support team if you’re unsure.

How do I remove or change the spool?

To remove the spool, hold the frame in one hand and gently rotate the spool side-to-side while pulling apart. It will disengage with a light “pop.” To reattach, press the spool back into the frame while slightly rotating until you hear or feel it click into place.

What line and backing capacity will my reel hold?

Capacity varies by model and size. As a general guideline:

  • Capacities are based on floating fly lines with 20 lb. backing
  • Using 30 lb. backing will reduce capacity by about 20%.

Each reel model page includes detailed specifications for line weights, capacities, and dimensions.

What sizes and weights are available?

Ross Reels are available across a range of sizes to cover trout, warmwater, and saltwater applications. Sizes and weights vary by model, but all reels are engineered to balance strength, lightweight performance, and durability. Check the product page for specifications on your reel.
