Fly Line Care Guide: How to Maintain and Clean Your Airflo Fly Lines
Keep your fly line casting like new with these expert tips from Airflo.
Why Fly Line Maintenance Matters
Your fly line is a critical piece of gear that directly impacts casting distance, accuracy, and presentation. Without regular cleaning and care, dirt, algae, and grime can degrade performance and shorten the life of your line.
At Airflo, we build durable fly lines with advanced materials like PU, but even the best lines need a little TLC. Follow this guide to keep your Airflo fly lines performing at their best season after season.
How Often Should You Clean Your Fly Line?
- Freshwater Use: Every 3–5 outings.
- Saltwater Use: After every use.
- Heavy Use or Muddy Conditions: After every use.
Before Storage: Clean and dry thoroughly before storing.
Step-by-Step: How to Clean Your Fly Line
- What You’ll Need
- A clean soft cloth or sponge
- Mild non-detergent soap (no harsh chemicals)
- A bucket or sink with lukewarm water
- General Fly Line Cleaner (optional)
- Strip and Soap
Remove the fly line from your reel and let it soak in a sink or bucket of lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap. Let it sit for 5+ minutes to loosen dirt. - Wipe it Down
Run the fly line through a clean, soft cloth. Gently apply pressure with your fingers to remove dirt and debris. Repeat if needed until the cloth comes away clean. - Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse the line with fresh clean water to remove any remaining soap. - Dry the Line
Lay the line loosely in large coils on a clean towel and let it air dry completely. - Apply Fly Line Cleaner (Optional)
Once dry, apply Fly Line Cleaner to restore slickness and enhance shootability. This step is especially important for older lines or lines that see heavy use.
Extra Fly Line Care Tips
- Avoid Rough Surfaces Where Possible
- Dragging your line on rough surfaces like rocks or concrete can damage the coating. Always be mindful of where your line lands.
- Watch for Cracks or Fraying
- Inspect your fly line regularly for signs of wear. If you notice cracking, memory coils, or reduced buoyancy, it might be time for a replacement.
- Store your fly line loosely coiled or on the reel in a cool, dry place. Avoid excessive heat, such as leaving your gear in a hot car or garage.
- Use a Line Winder for Long-Term Storage
- For out of season storage, consider using a line winder to reduce memory and prevent coiling.
Why Choose Airflo Fly Lines?
Airflo fly lines are made with PVC-free PU coatings that are more resistant to cracking, UV damage, and chemical degradation. With regular care, our lines outlast conventional lines and provide consistently smooth casting performance.
FLY LINE FAQ
How do I load my new fly line to my reel?
Great question! Typically, all Airflo Fly Lines come with a welded loop – a loop to loop connection is quick and simple option, using a large loop in your backing to pass the fly line spool through (An Albright knot is also a great option). Place the fly line spool on a pencil or pen so it can spin freely and hold the pencil/pen horizontally. Ensure the line runs off from the bottom of the spool, and not over the side/edge. Wind the line onto the reel evenly and under light tension. If you’re new to fly fishing, have your local shop load your first line – you can always unwind and reload it at home to learn.
Can I use household cleaners to clean my fly line?
No. Avoid detergents, solvents, or abrasive cleaners. Use only mild soap and water, or a line-safe cleaner and conditioner.
How do I store my fly line for the off season?
Clean and dry it thoroughly. Coil it loosely in large loops or store it on a line winder, and keep it in a cool, dark place. Regular fly line care is one of the easiest ways to protect your investment and improve your time on the water. Whether you fish saltwater flats or mountain streams, keeping your fly line clean and conditioned ensures every cast counts.
